What is Hair Dryer:

A hairdryer is also known as a blow dryer. It is an electrical device used to dry & style hair. The dryer uses an electric fan to blow air across a heating coil. As the air passes through the dryer it quickly heats up. When this warm air reaches the wet hair of the user it helps evaporate the water. Today, hairdryers come with a variety of brushes & combs to achieve different hairstyles.

Without a doubt, hairdryers are ideal for better shape as well as the style of hair. It helps to control the formation of temporary hydrogen bonds within each strand. Generally, these bonds are so very powerful, but are temporary & extremely sensitive to humidity. A single wash of hair can disappear.  For volume & discipline, hairstyles using blow dryers, which can be further improved with styling products & hairbrushes during drying to add tension, hold as well as a lift.

History:

The very first handheld hairdryer came to the market in the year 1925. Which was only 100 watts of heat & didn’t had sufficient power to dry hair quickly. Its weight was over 2 lbs (1 kg) because it was purely made of heavy steel & zinc. With the passage of time engineers improved the design & managed to triple the heat output, raising it to 300 watts. In the year 1960, further improvements in electrical technology allowed the production of hairdryers with up to 500 watts of power.

In the year 1970, manufacturers began to focus on improving the safety of the dryers too. Early hairdryers were dangerous & didn’t have the ability to avoid electrical shock. In the year 1970, the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) approved guidelines for hair dryer manufacturers to follow that would create safer products.

By the 1990s portable hairdryers were introduced which had the capability to produce over 1500 watts of heat. These hair dryers had a plastic body & were made up of better insulating materials with less weight. Now, modern hair dryers can produce up to 2000 watts of heat & can dry hair quickly, faster than ever before.

Why design is Important

One of the most important factors to consider when designing a portable hairdryer is the amount of heating power it can generate. Since warm air is capable of absorbing moisture than cold air, the temperature of the airflow is very critical. By calculating the specific heat of the air & understanding the maximum temperature that can be used without burning the skin. This assures that the device will generate enough heat to dry the hair quickly.

Modern hair dryers come with different attachments, such as diffusers, airflow concentrators, & comb nozzles for required & better results.

Types

Today there are two main types of blow dryers are in the market.

1- The handheld & 2- The rigid-hood dryer.

A Hood dryer has a hard plastic dome that fits over a person’s head to dry hair. Strong hot air is blown out through small openings around the inside of the dome so the hair is dried evenly. These Hood dryers are mostly found in hair salons.
