What is Fabric Steamer?

A clothes steamer is also called a garment steamer or fabric steamer. It is a device used for quickly removing wrinkles from garments & fabrics with the use of high-temperature steam. The working principle of clothes steamer is quite simple. Hot steam goes deep into fabrics & while doing so, it relaxes the inner fibers. In this way, it removes wrinkles faster than ironing. Fabric steamer works gently on all kinds of fabrics. It also gives fresh looks to your clothes since the steam penetrates deep inside fibers.

Sizes of the steamers

Steamers are in 3 basic sizes for clothes such as commercial floor models which are used in large manufacturing plants & dry cleaners, & mid-sized models for small businesses such as tailors or seamstresses, plus the most recent evolution in the steamer industry is the handheld mini steamers which is typically for household use or traveling.

Steamers technology relax fibers rather than flattening like traditional ironing, this process is also gentler on clothing & eliminates scorching. Clothes steamer can also be used to remove wrinkles from delicate fabrics such as silk etc.

Features

The steamer comes with several features like,

  • Temperature control dial for different fabric types
  • Specially shaped steam nozzle
  • Small water tank
  • Clothes hanger as well as pegs
  • Caster wheels & crease clips

Most of these features are normally found on the more expensive vertical valet clothes steamer models only. Handheld & travel or clothes steamers don’t often include these additional features. They are usually less powerful than their vertical valet steamers counterparts.

Travel steamers are compact & the water tank is directly connected to the steam blower. On the other hand, a typical large or medium steamer consists of a water tank. It has a heating element long metal rod, along with rubber hose & a brush attached to remove hair & lint. The water is added to the tank & heated until it boils & becomes vapor. These vapors are later used to remove wrinkles from the cloths. These steamers also come with hangers to hang the clothes.

A steamer machine takes the wrinkles out of cloth without making contact with the fabric. Basically, steamers are perfect for delicate fabrics, such as silk, satin, polyester as well as a jersey. The one amazing & unique benefit of using steamer is because it does not actually touch clothing fabric so there is almost zero chance of burning of fabric & your clothes remain perfectly safe. Another benefit is,  A clothing steamer can be used on such fabrics that are too difficult to iron, such as a screen-printed shirt or a suit jacket. Steamers are also very effective in smoothing out sleeves, pleats & ruffles in garments.

There are few things to keep in mind while suing steamers like, use a surface that can easily handle high temperatures. Also for colored clothing, test a patch first sometimes colors tend to run when moisture is applied to cloths. And be careful not to over steam. This overheat might damage the cloths.
